The ASEM Aquaculture Platform intends to work out an action-oriented agenda for co-operation and to develop a multi-stakeholder platform for dialogue, networking and continued coordination concerning sustainable aquaculture between EU and Asia.
Through its different stakeholders the platform aims to reconcile ecological and socio-economic demands and introduce or consolidate concepts of sustainability in aquaculture development in both regions. The platform connects experts, the public and policy-makers by disseminating knowledge up to policy levels as well as down to farmers or consumers.
The platform is supported by the FP7 programme of the European Commission and by the Flemish Research Council.
It is with great sorrow that we learned Dr Nandeesha has passed away in Chennai on December 27th, 2012. Dr Nandeesha was an inspiration and a relentless advocate of the empowerment of vulnerable aquaculture famers in Asia. Above all, he was a fine person. He will be dearly missed.

In order to give European industry representatives the opportunity to get a better insight in the Vietnamese and Chinese aquaculture industry and eventually make first contacts for business partnerships, business trips (one to Vietnam and one to China) will be organised together with EATIP's Asia Desk and Vietnamese partners (Directory of Fisheries - MARD, Can Tho University, Research Institute for Aquaculture n°2 - Ho Chi Minh City) resp. Chinese partners (China AquaFishNet).
As a first step towards stronger collaboration on higher aquaculture & fisheries education, 8 leading Asian aquaculture & fisheries institutes have established a consortium.

The ASEM Aquaculture Platform session is conceived as a moderated debate. Rather than traditional presentations we would invite one speaker per issue to give a brief account of the status and outlook of the issue at stake, followed by open discussion between the public and an expert panel.
